Tallow is rendered suet (soo-uht) from cattle or sheep. Suet is the fat primarily surrounding the kidneys and other major organs. The suet is then rendered under heat to purify it into tallow. There are many benefits of tallow because of the nutrients it contains such as; high in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K2, B12, Choline, omega 3’s, stearic acid and conjugated linoleic acid. The nutrients combined makes tallow an excellent occlusive agent that retains moisture in the skin and acts as a natural barrier. Tallow is a non-toxic nourishing and healing skin moisturizer that is safe for the body’s largest organ to absorb. It’s so powerful that Medical oncologists have studied the effects of grass-fed/grass-finished tallow and their research concluded that the tallow containing fats like conjugated linoleic acid has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties as well as the palmitoleic acid was proven to have natural antimicrobial properties (Clement).
Not all tallow is created equally. Our tallow comes from locally sourced cattle in Tennessee. 100% grass-fed and grass-finished cattle means they spend the entirety of their life grazing in open pastures excluding food such as GMO’s, corn, soy, or other grains and are free of antibiotics. Earth & Harvest believes in the value of regenerative farming practices that provide grass year round for the cattle by rotational grazing pastures. Scientific research also proved that regenerative farming helps improve carbon emissions due to the cattle leaving behind natural fertilizer in the grazing fields (Marin Carbon Project). Cattle that aren’t pasture raised lack nutrients such as the stearic acid and conjugated linoleic acid. Vitamin E is a powerful moisturizer and skin protectant which has also been found to be quadrupled in grass-fed and grass-finished cattle.
Tallow is a topical skin care balm that is safe to directly apply on the skin. Tallow is so versatile it can be used for cuts, scrapes, acne, dry chapped skin, sunburns, burns, rashes, aftershave, wrinkles, beard balm and more. It can also be used for stretch marks (pregnancy included), nipple cream for breastfeeding moms, and safe for baby skin to repair diaper rashes or skin irritants.
Tallow has a melting point of 95-104℉ (35-40℃). With the summer heat approaching we advise that you monitor your emails for the shipping/tracking information to promptly get your tallow products to limit opportunities of melting in your post box. If your product does melt the oils may separate, but it does not change the effectiveness of the product. You can gently stir the oils together again and refrigerate to resolidify the consistency. Store tallow in a cool dry place or refrigerate thereafter.
For every batch of tallow we use the same quality ingredients and grass fed/ grass finished tallow, however, even then each batch can vary in consistency due to being an animal based product. Variances come from specifics of the cattle’s environment such as their particular diet, the climate, the species of cow, and the cow’s age. Suet tallow is the fat primarily surrounding the kidneys and other major organs which is rich in fatty acids. The molecular structure of the fatty acids in each cow are different from those environmental factors which can affect the texture of how soft or hard the tallow comes to be. Also tallow balms tend to be more hard/ firm in the winter-cold weather, and more soft in the warmer weather. If you prefer your tallow to be more hard you can always put it in the refrigerator. If you prefer warmer you can keep in the bathroom/ warmer environment- just note in humid environment tallow may sweat/ oils may separate. Though each tallow balm can vary in consistency, the quality and effectiveness remains the same.
Tallow can last for up to a year if maintained in the proper environment. You can freeze tallow to extend its shelf life or store it in a cool dry, dark place free of moisture for everyday use. Our tallow is rendered without preservatives and additives which ensures the purity of our product when stored appropriately.
